Amid all the cash-strapped pretentiousness, Agnes B.'s earnest and unself-conscious display came as a breath of fresh air. The French high street retailer has been churning out the workaday basics for decades, and she sees fashion shows not as make-or-break trials by fire but rather as an opportunity to have fun and promote young and up-and-coming artists.
Sure, the clothes that came down her catwalk weren't particularly noteworthy -- just the kinds of cute printed summer dresses or tie-front cardigans that you might throw on to go buy milk or walk the dog. But there's something touching about a show where a puppet-maker and his clever dinosaur marionette take a bow, or the designer herself gets on the P.A. system mid-show to instruct guests on where they can buy the music.
The ugly was Miu Miu. The clothes were so frumpy and the styling so actively unattractive there was no way it was an accident, a collection that somehow went pear-shaped despite the designer's best efforts.

And some businesses give customers a small discount on their purchases for bringing in a reusable bag, Molina said.
The Solid Waste Division said it discovered "a handful" of shops where managers said they needed an extra month or two past the beginning of 2011 to use up their remaining plastic bags.
The division did have to investigate 16 businesses allegedly not in compliance, but they all got on board after being contacted by investigators, according to the study. Only one unidentified shop received a warning letter. And no business was cited or fined. Fines could go up to $1,000 a day.
Takamine said he is confident that everyone is now in compliance, especially with business so cutthroat during a sagging economy. Anyone breaking the law would be "snitched on" by either a competitor or an environmentalist, Takamine said.
"In general, I haven't heard anything negative," Molina said about the law.

After a small bit of advertising in the form of a banner over the storefront doorway, Kravchuk was delighted to have received several calls from customers looking to consign their pieces. In fact, she said there has been so much interest she has enough in her collection to fill the store. Their own memories of Camp Foster are exceptionally fond - "We met there," Kris Bahr said - but beyond that, there is in Sioux Falls an enduring institutional memory about going to camp, according to Anne Bahr.
"I can walk through Hy-Vee wearing my Camp Foster shirt, and people are always coming up to me, 'Oh, my kid was an asthma camper,' " she said.
"People say they had so much fun around the campfire or they remember walking across the backward bridge," Kris Bahr added.
Camp Foster was founded as the first YMCA state camp when "a handful of people put some money in a pot" and bought 214 acres on East Lake Okoboji, Carr said. In the 1970s, it became an independent corporation with its own governing board.
The carnival featured about a dozen games of chance geared to children, mainly involving tossing a ball, ring or bean bag, and camp staples of hot dogs and a campfire also were planned. The event battled overcast, chilly, blustery weather.
But Carr said he is measuring success less in attendance and more in terms of enthusiasm among alums.

"Why drawing? My plan was actually to study architecture," he says. "I was about to leave for Switzerland to study, but then I met Dina, and that changed my plans. In any case, I was constantly drawing; my mother said that from the age of 3 I didn't stop drawing. When I started out, I also drew sets and wall hangings, but that work did not appeal to me. At the same time I started with the collecting and that stems from my father, who was also a collector. I remember there was nowhere to sit in our apartment, but there was a sculpture by Danziger."

Kipnis studied drawing with the artist Dan Hoffner and at Aharon Avni's studio, and then went for additional studies to Florence and Paris. When he returned to Israel, he began teaching drawing and stained glass work.
"Why drawing? My plan was actually to study architecture," he says. "I was about to leave for Switzerland to study, but then I met Dina, and that changed my plans. In any case, I was constantly drawing; my mother said that from the age of 3 I didn't stop drawing. When I started out, I also drew sets and wall hangings, but that work did not appeal to me. At the same time I started with the collecting and that stems from my father, who was also a collector. I remember there was nowhere to sit in our apartment, but there was a sculpture by Danziger."

"It's a time when we do the greatest amount of our business, but it is also a season that defines retailers," said Jim Sluzewski, a spokesman at Macy's Inc., which last year saw 28% of its sales in the last two months of the year.
After the recession-plagued 2008 holiday season, the worst in more than four decades, retailers say they've become much more savvy about confronting economic challenges. They're not ordering too much inventory and they're making sure that prices are budget-friendly.
"We are well prepared," Sluzewski said. "Our business is very flexible and we have a lot of ways to adjust our business no matter what happens."
Retailers, which ring up as much 40% of their annual sales during the last two months of the year, also are relying on a tried-and-true rule: Consumers love to splurge when the holidays roll around.
Shopper Deven Ronnquist, 63, was already keeping an eye out for holiday gifts for her family on a trip to the Glendale Galleria recently, setting a loose gift budget of $3,000.
"We have a tradition of spending way too much — we just have a ring of presents around the tree," the La Crescenta administrative assistant said. "I'm going to work hard to pay down some of my credit cards in the meantime."

Driving to away games is the only time there is an advantage to living in Oklahoma City while supporting for FC Dallas. Cutting 200 miles off the drive is nice. Still, despite the three hour head start, I somehow managed to be the next-to-last of our traveling group of Inferno members to arrive at Livestrong Sporting Park. The last group to arrive would have beaten me there, but for some reason their GPS tried to send them to Arrowhead Stadium. One of the satellites clearly hasn’t had a software update since 2007.
As always, the folks from the Kansas City supporters group, The Cauldron, were welcoming and gracious. They invited us to their tailgate party, swapped friendly insults with us, shared their beer, and generally made us feel at home. This is not a universal phenomenon in the world of soccer, of course. In most countries, opposing supporter groups are more likely to trade blows than beer.
Our soccer culture has developed differently. In the United States, to be a soccer fan is to be a lonely island in a sea of indifference. We grew up desperately searching for soccer (if I may mix my metaphors a bit) like a thirsty man seeking water. We are not picky about which oasis we find.
So, when we find other people who share our obsession, our first impulse is to befriend them, not to beat them with a blunt object. When I see the Cauldron, or any other MLS supporters group, I don’t see enemies, I see friends who root for a different team. I’ve had similar experiences with supporters groups from Colorado, New England, Chicago, San Jose, heck even Houston. The few times the Inferno has had a bit of trouble in Houston, it hasn’t been with the Supporters, but with small groups of young punks who think wearing the same color shirt makes them tough guys.
