Look good on the cheap with beauty swaps [rolex uhren watches]

You've probably heard of clothing swaps, book swaps, maybe even plant swaps. The concept is simple: Gather a group of people, bring your new or gently used fill-in-the-blank, and trade it for someone else's more appealing fill-in-the-blank. Just about anything is swappable, as long as there's someone willing to swap with you.

So why not beauty products?

Most of us have amassed a few "mistakes" -- the mismatched foundation, the unflattering shade of lipstick, those gift-with-purchases that you thought you wanted but never did use. Instead of letting them collect dust in the back of a drawer, consider hosting a beauty swap.

Some fellow product junkies and I decided to give it a try. We invited friends to trade in their castoffs. Everyone came armed with a handful of new or barely used goods, from yellow nail polish to bottles of perfume. We organized the products into designated areas (hair, makeup, skin care, fragrance) and let the swapping begin.

Surprisingly, chaos did not ensue. That's the beauty of limiting a swap to friends: Everyone plays nice and goes home happy.

Katie Najjar took a chance on a deep berry lip stain she probably wouldn't have purchased otherwise. Laura Nelli of Nelle Handbags scored several fall eye shadow palettes ("the perfect shades for contouring!"). And beauty blogger Kara Nesvig found just the red-orange lipstick she had been looking for. It was fun, eco-friendly and heavy on the party favors.

If you'd like to host your own beauty swap, see the tips on E5.

BFFs only: Because beauty products are a bit more personal than, say, paperbacks, you'll probably want to limit the group to good friends (i.e., people whose shampoo you'd be comfortable sharing). For variety and manageability, aim for about 10 people.

Last day of Paris shows is good, bad and ugly [rolex uhren watches]

The ninth and final day of Paris' grueling ready-to-wear marathon was reminiscent of Sergio Leone's classic 1966 spaghetti western, with good, bad and downright ugly displays.

With an average of 11 shows on the calendar daily, every day is, of course, a mixed bag. But because many top fashion editors tend to cut out early, there are fewer top-tier labels on the last day and more emerging designers who don't have the deep pockets of the majors, which makes for an uneven experience.

Two shows Wednesday made it into the good category: Louis Vuitton -- which won a pre-emptive round of pre-show applause for its set, a life-size spinning merry-go-round -- and Elie Saab, the unstoppable red carpet steamroller who continued to churn out his signature ravishing, high-wattage gowns, this time in saturated jewel tones.

Most of the rest was bad, as designers of little means tried to imitate the slick, hyper-produced style of the luxury supernovas' shows, with sometimes snicker-producing results.

Amid all the cash-strapped pretentiousness, Agnes B.'s earnest and unself-conscious display came as a breath of fresh air. The French high street retailer has been churning out the workaday basics for decades, and she sees fashion shows not as make-or-break trials by fire but rather as an opportunity to have fun and promote young and up-and-coming artists.

Sure, the clothes that came down her catwalk weren't particularly noteworthy -- just the kinds of cute printed summer dresses or tie-front cardigans that you might throw on to go buy milk or walk the dog. But there's something touching about a show where a puppet-maker and his clever dinosaur marionette take a bow, or the designer herself gets on the P.A. system mid-show to instruct guests on where they can buy the music.

The ugly was Miu Miu. The clothes were so frumpy and the styling so actively unattractive there was no way it was an accident, a collection that somehow went pear-shaped despite the designer's best efforts.

Miuccia Prada, the critical darling who's also behind Milan-based supernova Prada, is too smart for that. It actually felt like she was thumbing her nose at the fashion establishment, daring them not to like clothes that were trying their best to make themselves as undesirable as possible.

Paris is known as the most creative of the fashion capitals, and there are usually scads of brilliant shows here. This season was a bit of disappointment, with just a handful of collections that had people buzzing. Dries Van Noten was a winner with his sheath dresses in colorblocked silk printed with photo and etchings. Givenchy got top marks for its tuned skirt suits, as did the frothy dresses with a dark side at Alexander McQueen.

The saga of former Dior designer John Galliano's fall from grace continued to captivate fashion insiders. The extravagant designer was dismissed from Dior last March after a video showing him praising Hitler went viral on the internet. His successor has yet be named, and speculation over who it might be continued to dominate the small talk benchmates make as they wait -- sometimes interminably -- for shows to start.

The county ordered the study [rolex uhren watches]

The county ordered the study

The county ordered the study and gave time for preparation to accommodate the businesses, he said. County officials wanted shop owners ready for the overhaul. They also hoped they would reduce or eliminate their stock of plastic bags. So, during nearly a year-and-half lead-in period, officials held informational meetings across the county and managed a publicity campaign.

Now, almost nine months after the law went into effect, the Solid Waste Division released the results of its "simple" survey conducted on three occasions at a dozen large retailers, such as Safeway and Kmart, Takamine said.
A few of those businesses had been the bill's biggest critics because of the extra cost of upgrading their stock. But Molina said the law probably "tapped a new market for reusable bags. They're everywhere now, and some are really nice."

Stores also have gone so far as to charge customers a fee of 5 cents for a paper bag and as little as 50 cents for a large reusable bag, or they can't have any bag at all. Molina said he suspects that some businesses that don't charge for a bag recoup the cost elsewhere in the store.

And some businesses give customers a small discount on their purchases for bringing in a reusable bag, Molina said.
The Solid Waste Division said it discovered "a handful" of shops where managers said they needed an extra month or two past the beginning of 2011 to use up their remaining plastic bags.

The division did have to investigate 16 businesses allegedly not in compliance, but they all got on board after being contacted by investigators, according to the study. Only one unidentified shop received a warning letter. And no business was cited or fined. Fines could go up to $1,000 a day.

Takamine said he is confident that everyone is now in compliance, especially with business so cutthroat during a sagging economy. Anyone breaking the law would be "snitched on" by either a competitor or an environmentalist, Takamine said.
"In general, I haven't heard anything negative," Molina said about the law.

Simplicity Consignment Boutique [rolex uhren watches]

Simplicity Consignment Boutique

Simplicity Consignment Boutique is scheduled to open on Maple Street on October 1, and for new business owner Bonnie Kravchuk, it can’t come soon enough. She has been working for months to get the finishing touches completed, from the construction on the inside and a fresh coat of paint to the new pane-less store-front windows.

Born and raised in Peabody, Kravchuk had spent the majority of her work experience as a medical transcriptionist. When her office closed, she began looking to make a career change. “I’ve always been interested in fashion and clothes, going to yard sales, and consignment shops," she said. "My cousin owns a consignment shop, and I started to do some research on opening my own. It’s a dream of mine, and I’m really excited about it.”

Kravchuk scouted several locations to open her shop, but when she found the storefront on Maple Street in Danvers Square, with high tin ceilings and beautiful hardwood floors, she knew she had to have it. “It had characteristics that I really like, it really struck me,” she said.

After a small bit of advertising in the form of a banner over the storefront doorway, Kravchuk was delighted to have received several calls from customers looking to consign their pieces. In fact, she said there has been so much interest she has enough in her collection to fill the store. She specializes in high quality, designer fashions from Liz Claiborne, Juicy Couture, BCBG, and Talbots, to True Religion and Seven Jeans, Armani, Ralph Lauren, J Crew and more.

“I’m trying to cover all ages and sizes, so there’s something for everybody; from toddler, up through teen and womens, and from petite to plus. I want a variety to suit all tastes,” she said.
Customers will be able to find an array of accessories, small home accent pieces, and a huge supply of shoes. “I have coach boots, Talbot shoes still in the boxes...I’m really fussy about the shoes, [because] people want shoes that are nearly perfect, near brand new-and I have that.”

To get Camp Foster alumni in the Sioux Falls [rolex uhren watches]

To get Camp Foster alumni in the Sioux Falls

To get Camp Foster alumni in the Sioux Falls area fired up about reconnecting with the summer haven on the shores of East Lake Okoboji, supporters hosted a carnival Saturday on the grounds of the Sioux Falls YMCA's own Leif Ericson Camp.

The event also was designed "to make people aware that YMCA camping is valuable for kids growing up," Camp Foster director Josh Carr said. It also raises money for scholarships for future campers.

Sioux Falls, along with Sioux City, Iowa, Kansas City, Mo., and Omaha, usually sends hundreds of kids to Camp Foster annually, Carr said.
Kris and Anne Bahr of Sioux Falls, who worked at the camp regularly from 2002 to 2005 and still help there every summer, organized the carnival. Their own memories of Camp Foster are exceptionally fond - "We met there," Kris Bahr said - but beyond that, there is in Sioux Falls an enduring institutional memory about going to camp, according to Anne Bahr.

"I can walk through Hy-Vee wearing my Camp Foster shirt, and people are always coming up to me, 'Oh, my kid was an asthma camper,' " she said.
"People say they had so much fun around the campfire or they remember walking across the backward bridge," Kris Bahr added.

Camp Foster was founded as the first YMCA state camp when "a handful of people put some money in a pot" and bought 214 acres on East Lake Okoboji, Carr said. In the 1970s, it became an independent corporation with its own governing board.

The carnival featured about a dozen games of chance geared to children, mainly involving tossing a ball, ring or bean bag, and camp staples of hot dogs and a campfire also were planned. The event battled overcast, chilly, blustery weather.
But Carr said he is measuring success less in attendance and more in terms of enthusiasm among alums.

He grew up in a Revisionist home [rolex uhren watches]

He grew up in a Revisionist home

He grew up in a Revisionist home, and his father was one of the first members of Brit Biryonim, a nationalistic movement active in Palestine in the 1930s that opposed British rule. During his military service, he was an operations officer and was injured in the Six-Day War.

"The army was an important matter," he says. "I was raised in a home where giving was an important part of life, and to this day, I volunteer at two old age homes and teach drawing."

He grew up in Ramat Gan's Nahalat Ganim neighborhood. From there, the family moved to Micha Street in Tel Aviv. After his military service, Kipnis married Dina, the daughter of Yitzhak Dubno (one of the first members of the Palmach ), a native of Kibbutz Negba, and despite the ideological differences between them, they were together for 30 years until separating in 1990.

The couple has three children who live in the United States, a doctor, a restauranteur and a dancer.
Kipnis studied drawing with the artist Dan Hoffner and at Aharon Avni's studio, and then went for additional studies to Florence and Paris. When he returned to Israel, he began teaching drawing and stained glass work.

"Why drawing? My plan was actually to study architecture," he says. "I was about to leave for Switzerland to study, but then I met Dina, and that changed my plans. In any case, I was constantly drawing; my mother said that from the age of 3 I didn't stop drawing. When I started out, I also drew sets and wall hangings, but that work did not appeal to me. At the same time I started with the collecting and that stems from my father, who was also a collector. I remember there was nowhere to sit in our apartment, but there was a sculpture by Danziger."

The chief economist for the International Council [rolex uhren watches]

The chief economist for the International Council

The chief economist for the International Council of Shopping Centers, a major retail trade group, estimates that sales will rise 3.5% for November and December combined. Last year, sales during the same period beat expectations, rising 4.4% in what industry analysts called the best holiday results since 2006.

"It's a time when we do the greatest amount of our business, but it is also a season that defines retailers," said Jim Sluzewski, a spokesman at Macy's Inc., which last year saw 28% of its sales in the last two months of the year.

After the recession-plagued 2008 holiday season, the worst in more than four decades, retailers say they've become much more savvy about confronting economic challenges. They're not ordering too much inventory and they're making sure that prices are budget-friendly.

"We are well prepared," Sluzewski said. "Our business is very flexible and we have a lot of ways to adjust our business no matter what happens."

Retailers, which ring up as much 40% of their annual sales during the last two months of the year, also are relying on a tried-and-true rule: Consumers love to splurge when the holidays roll around.

Shopper Deven Ronnquist, 63, was already keeping an eye out for holiday gifts for her family on a trip to the Glendale Galleria recently, setting a loose gift budget of $3,000.

"We have a tradition of spending way too much — we just have a ring of presents around the tree," the La Crescenta administrative assistant said. "I'm going to work hard to pay down some of my credit cards in the meantime."

The start of holiday shopping comes amid skittishness over the volatile stock market, stubbornly high unemployment and tight credit that has constrained business growth. Strong holiday sales could provide much-needed momentum, said Michael Dart, a retail strategist at consulting firm Kurt Salmon.

Driving to away games [rolex uhren watches]

Driving to away games

Driving to away games is the only time there is an advantage to living in Oklahoma City while supporting for FC Dallas. Cutting 200 miles off the drive is nice. Still, despite the three hour head start, I somehow managed to be the next-to-last of our traveling group of Inferno members to arrive at Livestrong Sporting Park. The last group to arrive would have beaten me there, but for some reason their GPS tried to send them to Arrowhead Stadium. One of the satellites clearly hasn’t had a software update since 2007.

As always, the folks from the Kansas City supporters group, The Cauldron, were welcoming and gracious. They invited us to their tailgate party, swapped friendly insults with us, shared their beer, and generally made us feel at home. This is not a universal phenomenon in the world of soccer, of course. In most countries, opposing supporter groups are more likely to trade blows than beer.

Our soccer culture has developed differently. In the United States, to be a soccer fan is to be a lonely island in a sea of indifference. We grew up desperately searching for soccer (if I may mix my metaphors a bit) like a thirsty man seeking water. We are not picky about which oasis we find.

So, when we find other people who share our obsession, our first impulse is to befriend them, not to beat them with a blunt object. When I see the Cauldron, or any other MLS supporters group, I don’t see enemies, I see friends who root for a different team. I’ve had similar experiences with supporters groups from Colorado, New England, Chicago, San Jose, heck even Houston. The few times the Inferno has had a bit of trouble in Houston, it hasn’t been with the Supporters, but with small groups of young punks who think wearing the same color shirt makes them tough guys.
