Can Carrie Bradshaw Afford This Season's $3,000 Louboutins? [women handbags]

In the pilot episode of Sex And The City, Carrie Bradshaw, the modern-day Imelda Marcos, mentioned something about spending $400 on Manolo Blahnik shoes. In those days, circa late 1990s, $400 was a steep price to pay for a pair of designer heels.

Fast-forward to 2011 and you’d be lucky to find a pair of Manolos or Jimmy Choos in the $400 price range, on sale. In the past few years the price of designer shoes—especially those from Blahnik, Choo and Christian Louboutin—have escalated so much that the cost of a pair is the equivalent of a month’s rent for a studio or even a one-bedroom apartment.

Need proof? There’s a pair of crystal-covered peep-toes from Christian Louboutin called Very Riche at Barneys selling for $3,695. And that’s not the most expensive. There’s a pair of crocodile leather pumps from Manolo Blahnik that comes with a $4,600 price tag. If you’re shopping for boots prepare to spend north of $1,500 and that’s for basic leather.

At Netaporter, a pair of Pierre Hardy suede sandals are selling for $1,380 and Bergdorf Goodman’s website is selling Charlotte Olympia leopard print platform pumps for $905, plus tax. The season’s must-have Miu Miu glitter booties are listed for $890 on the brand’s e-commerce site.

Cue Carrie Bradshaw voice over: “I couldn’t help but wonder, when did shoes become so expensive? Did I just charged another pair of $1,500 Nicholas Kirkwood that I can’t afford? Oh wait I’m married to Mr. Big now. I can afford anything.”

Many have attributed the jump in prices of shoes to the demise of the It bag. Women grew tired of keeping up with the latest bags each season and focused their spending on shoes instead. Carrie and her cohorts are partly to blame too, as well that beer commercial where a woman shows off her shoe closet to her friends.

And then there is that trend for overly designed, vertigo-inducing, street style photographer-magnet shoes. I’ll save that for another story. Meanwhile, here’s a slideshow of some of the expensive, albeit gorgeous and lust-worthy, shoes of the season.
